What Time Does Your Child Go To Bed?

Actually, that is not the question I am really asking.  It’s more like, “What does your child do after you think they’ve gone to bed?”  I realise I am crossing the line between school and home, however, I think my job description does that a bit already…

I have had a number of conversations with staff, students and parents regarding online gaming.  From these conversations, it appears that we have students who are seemingly tucked into bed but are in reality going online, without the knowledge of their parents.  Some of the reports I have heard include students who are gaming online well after midnight, with other school aged students, as well as unknown others.  The purpose of this information is not to discuss the pros and cons of computer gaming.  However, there is overwhelming evidence of the impact of lack of sleep on the developing mind.  Couple that with the nature of some of these games, along with the cyber safety concerns raised (who is that person they are chatting with?), and I think this is an issue well worth raising.  Is your child involved?  I would encourage you to find out.

I would strongly encourage parents, particularly those of older Primary students, to consider these issues.  The school is happy to help, and can point you towards resources and other assistance.  Some helpful websites include:

Staff Comings and Goings

As we continue to work on staff changes for 2018, I would like to announce the following changes:

Mr John Green will be leaving us, after over 8 years at William Carey.  John and family are undertaking a “tree change” and heading for Orange.  We wish them God’s blessing, and shall miss John’s strong, consistent and wide-ranging contributions to the school.

Mrs Helen Walton is also leaving, after an amazing 22 years at William Carey, and even longer than that as a parent in the school.  Helen has family commitments which require her time and focus.  Many, many of our families would know Mrs Walton well, as her role of learning support aid has covered all grades over many years.

Mrs Emma Davison has taught 1E for three terms this year, picking up from Mrs Ellen Smith, who was on maternity leave.  We thank Mrs Davison for her work this year and look forward to working with her in a casual capacity in 2018.

Joining us in 2018 are:

  • Mrs Lynne Gross (Prep)
  • Mrs Michelle Larrea (Prep)
  • Miss Rachael Sanders (K-6)
  • Miss Emma Murada (K-6)
  • Mr Daniel Hudson (K-6)
  • Mrs Linda Cooper (K-6)

More about these people in the Newsletter early next year.

Mrs Joanna Hingston, who has been covering a maternity leave block for 2017, has also come onto permanent staff.
