High School Advanced Learning Update

In Week 4, two talented teams of eight students represented WCCS at the Gateway 8 Academic Gala Day. The theme of the day was Colour with teams completing several subject based challenges around the theme.

This is the seventh year that William Carey has participated in the Gala Day. Both the 7/8 and 9/10 teams had a great time competing against similar students from private schools all over Sydney.

Although we didn’t place in the top five schools this year, the team enjoyed the day and did a wonderful job representing the school.

Year 9/10 team

Daniel V, Grace N, Charlotte C, Benjamin D, Claretta T, Zachary B, Neha J and Xavia W.

Year 7/8 team

Adelaide B, Caleb H, Abby F, Anwyn W, Dorothy K, Caitlin T, Simone W and Yeshaya R.

After passing Round 1 in Term 2, Grace N (Year 10) represented the school at the 2019 NSW Brain Bee Final, a competition for high school students to learn about neuroscience. In addition to participating in live questions at the final, she also experienced a day of activities to educate her about neuroscience research at UNSW.

In Week 5 a group of students from Years 7-10 participated in the NSW Regional Final of the Tournament of the Minds.

The group had five weeks to create and design a solution to a Social Science challenge. They also had to create their props and write a ten minute script.

The group greatly impressed the judges with the depth of research on the small landlocked country of Swaziland.

Congratulations to Xavia W, Emma H, Min Ki S, Xu S, Nathan W, Carter M and Anwyn W on a fantastic effort.
