PRESS RELEASES - Year 11 boys make top 6 in robotics poster design competition.
Message posted - Wednesday, November 04, 2009

If someone asked you to design a robot, where would you start? No idea? That’s ok, we have you covered.

Earlier this year, ESA (Embedded Systems Australia) hosted a competition in conjunction with a presentation by Rodney Brooks, the Professor of Robotics at MIT and founder of the world’s leading supply of robots, iRobot. The Legends of Innovation Poster Competition required students to create a poster that outlined the design of a robotics system that would help make people safer and more productive in their work environments, without doing the job for them.

Year 11 students Victor, Matthew, Ben and Dylan came up with a design for a robot that would help industry workers cut through metal and timber more efficiently. They didn’t have enough time to entirely finish the design as they only found out about the competition a week before it closed. Although they didn’t start until late in the game, the boys’ entry was so impressive that it placed in the top six out of one hundred entries. Needless to say, the boys were very pleased with their effort.

It’s no surprise that these Year 11 students were so successful in designing a robot – Dylan and Matthew both want to work with computers in some way, Ben hopes to develop gaming software and Victor is aspiring to be a computer engineer. With their recent designing success, it seems that they are well on their way to achieving these goals.
