So This Is Christmas…
This is the opening line to “Happy Xmas (War Is Over)”, penned by John Lennon in 1971.  It is a gentle Christmas song, giving us hope for the season and the New Year.  Or is it?  Anyone who knows much about the song will know that it is, in fact, a strong anti-war anthem, something that Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono had been espousing for a number of years.

As we head into the Christmas season, I would like to focus on another line from the song:

A very merry Christmas and a happy new year
Let’s hope it’s a good one without any fear

Let me start by saying that I do indeed wish this for all of our school families!  But I would like to go further, and suggest that the original Christmas is, in part, about offering us a way forward “without any fear”.  When God sent His Son Jesus to be amongst us on the first Christmas, there were many goals to be achieved.  One of these goals is to provide us with a life we can live without fear.  Probably one of the clearest verses regarding this comes from John’s Gospel, where Jesus is farewelling His disciples.  He says:

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.  John 14:27

As you enjoy your Christmas with families and friends, I would encourage you to take some time to dwell on the peace that comes from knowing Jesus as your Lord and Saviour.
