From the Assistant Primary Deputies

Welcome to Term 2!
We trust you all had an enjoyable time with family and friends over the school holiday break. Term 2 means winter school uniform so please ensure all your child’s clothing is clearly labelled. Mr Burgess continues on leave until the beginning of Week 3, we trust he is enjoying his holiday.

Term 2 is a very busy time at school: athletics and cross country carnivals occur, NAPLAN for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9, and, at the end of the term, half yearly school reports are distributed.

In Weeks 3 and 4, students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be sitting the NAPLAN Test.  This year, WCCS will be completing the tests online, with the only exception being Year 3 Writing. Students will complete the test through a secure browser at a desktop computer during class time. At school, students have had opportunities to practice an online version of the test. Your child can practice at home through this link.

Please remember that NAPLAN is a snapshot of student achievement. In class, students have been practising and gaining experience with the style of questions that NAPLAN offers. The best advice we can give is to encourage your child to do their best and ensure that they have a good night sleep before the tests. A printed copy of the WCCS Primary NAPLAN timetable for Year 3 and 5 families has been sent home, if you have any queries, please contact the Primary Office. NAPLAN testing will be completed from Tuesday 15th May through to Friday 25th May.

P-2 Fun Run and Year 2-6 Cross Country Carnival
Prep to Year 2 will be participating in a Fun Run on Wednesday, 9th May, on the Primary Oval.  Please look at the timetable for when each grade will be involved. As a part of Year 2 students’ preparation for Year 3, they are fortunate to participate in both the P-2 Fun Run and Year 2-6 Cross Country Carnival.

The 2-6 Cross Country Carnival will be held on Friday 11th May.  The carnival allows students in Year 2 to Year 6 to demonstrate their long distance running skills. Students run either two or three laps of the school course, depending on their age. Children turning 7 to 10 years old in 2018 run two laps while 11 and 12 year olds run three laps. It is vitally important that students run in their correct age group. We will also be holding a sausage sizzle during the carnival. Sausages and drinks must be pre-ordered through the Uniform Shop. Please fill in the order form and send it in with your child or visit the Uniform Shop in person.  If you are available to cook sausages on the day, we would love your help. Please provide your details on the note or contact the Primary Office.

This year we are also incorporating a World Vision fundraiser as a part of the Cross Country carnival for Years 3-6. Students and their families can donate money to the ‘run for water’ fundraiser. Students who have donated will be given a ‘bib’ to wear, pinned to their t-shirt, as way to displaying their desire to help others. Thank you in advance for the kind donations and support of this Matphutseng Partnership event.

Mother’s Day Breakfast
Thank you also to the staff and students who volunteered their time to help with our Mother’s Day Breakfast on Wednesday morning. It was a lovely morning with many mothers, aunties and grandmothers making the time to come to school and celebrate the joy of their role. You are precious and loved by your families and children. Enjoy your special day next Sunday. Happy Mother’s Day!

Holiday Reflection – by Janice Post
During the holidays I had the opportunity to go camping with my family. It was a great time to relax and unplug from our fast paced world. Spending time in God’s creation is awesome. Stopping and taking time to unwind and reflect on our lives is very important. During this time, I was reminded of the important things in my life and how vital it is not to take these things for granted. May you also find time to stop and reflect on what is important.
