NAPLAN Online trials have been and gone since the last newsletter. From the school’s perspective, they seemed to go very well. This indicates to me that it is likely NAPLAN Online will become a permanent feature from 2018 onwards, or 2019 at the latest. The school will have to adjust some of our preparation routines, but overall I think the change will be a good one. I will keep you informed, as decisions are made by the government.
We have had some excellent results in the recent ICAS Mathematics and English Competitions. A large number of the students who entered received either a credit (top 30% of all entrants) or a distinction (top 10% of all entrants), with four students receiving a high distinction (top 1% of all entrants). Congratulations to the following students for receiving a high distinction in the following competitions:
ICAS English Competition – Anwyn W, Rohan W and Ria K.
ICAS Mathematics – Kaleb B.
Further congratulations are in order for Kaleb B, who also gained second place in the Royal Australian Chemical Institute Crystal Growing Competition – Kindergarten to Year 3 division, which is a great achievement. He was also finalist in the Open K-6 division, which was actually won by his brother Austin! The boys also finished in the finals of various other divisions. Definitely a family for our Science department to be looking out for! Congratulations also to Hannah Y, Samantha T, Ariana N and Birbeant S, who were finalists in their divisions. Alexander D was also highly commended.
I enjoyed wandering through the ALC Science Fair earlier in the week. There was a great range of experiments that had been carried out by the students, ranging from scientifically evaluating sporting techniques through to generating electricity from fruit and vegetables. More budding scientists in our midst.
Next term kicks off with a bang. In week two we have book week, which culminates in Grandparent’s Day on the Friday where they will also be able to enjoy a book parade on the day. There will be the usual book fair, with a great variety of books on sale. More information to come soon.
I pray everyone has a safe and enjoyable holiday break, and gets to enjoy some great times with family and friends. Remember, if you are still looking for some fun activities over the holidays, our Vacation Care program has it all. I look forward to seeing everyone back next term.
