SLC Report

The Senior Leadership Council would like to welcome all students back for the second term of 2017. We hope you had a rejuvenating break and are pumped for the new term ahead of us.

We hate to remind the students but Term 2 means that half yearly exams for Years 7-11 are just around the corner (oh no!) and we are entering a time of perhaps increased anxiety and stress. We would like to encourage students through this hard time and ask everyone to keep students in your prayers. We are reminded of Isaiah 41:9-10: ‘I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you. I said, ‘You are my servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you. So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.’ This verse communicates an image of an all-powerful God who has chosen to protect his creation and through this, it serves as a reminder to the students that God does not value us because of our marks, rather, we find value through love and devotion to Christ. Moreover why should we fear any exams if we have the strength of our God? We also encourage you to prepare well and seek your teachers help, too.

The Peer Support program running in High School has been running since early Term 1 and is an engaging and encouraging time where trained Year 11 leaders attend Year 7 pastoral care classes to present tips and helpful techniques on how to succeed in High School. Some of these include teaching the value of perseverance and positive self talk, which enables Year 7 students to have a greater grasp of tools that can help them to reach their goals throughout High School. The continual positive feedback from both Year 7 and their PC teachers is reassuring, and we hope that we have impacted each student’s thinking throughout this time.

SLC sent two representatives (who happened to be the two of us!) to Year 6 camp. This was lots of fun as we were able to mingle with the soon to be high schoolers and see their view for the future. Over many games of ping pong and ice hockey we heard that they were excited for what was to come but were thoroughly enjoying their last year of Primary. We also spoke to the year group about how their is no ‘undo button’ on our words or actions and how they can’t be taken back. However, within the talk, we identified that everyone makes mistakes and should be forgiven; just like Christ forgave us for every one of our sins. We also ran several games and were overwhelmed by their deluge of enthusiasm and energy! Year 9 camp is also just around the corner in Week 2 and Abbey and Miki are extremely excited to visit the students.

We would also like to remind the students and parents to keep an eye on the Instagram page. The SLC constantly post updates and encouragements for the students and we are excited to expand the use of the Instagram page in the coming weeks. If you are not following the page yet it can be found at @studentsatcarey.

Yours in Christ,
Keegan and Halanie
